MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT: LFF

Our monthly spotlight reintroduces gems from the past. This month’s focus is London Film Festival related in honour of the festival taking place from the 9-20 October. See our selection below:

OCCUPIED CITY

Dir. Steve McQueen

Oscar and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen opens this year’s festival with Blitz starring Saoirse Ronan. Last year McQueen’s monumental documentary Occupied City also screened at the festival to sold out audiences. A mesmerising excavation of Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, Occupied City initially had its World Premiere at Cannes, before coming to LFF, NYFF and IDFA, as well as being nominated for a BIFA.

Happy as lazzaro

Dir. Alice Rohrwacher

From the director of La Chimera, Happy as Lazzaro began its journey at Cannes Film Festival in 2018 where it won Best Screenplay. The fantasy-drama film then went on to be nominated for four European Film Awards, and screened in festivals including LFF, NYFF and IFFR.

WHITE RIOT

Dir. Rubika Shah

Rubika Shah’s award-winning and energising film charts vital national protest movement Rock Against Racism, from grassroots beginnings through to a major multicultural event. Winner of Best Documentary at LFF in 2019, White Riot also received the Special Mention Crystal Bear at Berlinale in 2020 as well as being nominated for a BIFA.
